About Us: Our Philosophy

We are unique.

Giving Tree Coffee is one of the only coffee brands in the world with a unique business model that partners community and consumers to promote a win-win situation that brings goodwill to all.

Coffee farmers face poverty

About 4,000 Salvadoran children are suffering from malnutrition in the coffee region, according to the Health Ministry of El Salvador. In more than 50 countries around the world, 25 million coffee farmers and their families face deep poverty and misery, in part due to a drastic fall in world coffee prices. The price paid to coffee farmers has fallen by more than 70% over the past five years. Taking inflation into account, families are earning less for their product than their ancestors did 100 years ago.

Farmers in El Salvador have suffered not just from low prices but also from an increasingly unequal distribution of the wealth generated by the coffee trade. This is the result of corporate practices that seek to convert low prices into expanded profit margins. Most of the profits are captured by the transnational companies which control the international trading and processing of coffee. Companies like Starbucks, the Seattle-based coffee-shop giant, continue to perform very strongly.

Innocent children are suffering

It is clear that the coffee market cannot sacrifice millions of poor farmers. No one should forget that it is precisely these poor farmers who, with their hard work, have fostered the wealth of the world coffee industry. Hundreds of thousands of farmers and their families are hungry. Children leave school to work or because their parents cannot afford school fees. They go without health care, without fuel, new clothing, and other necessities. Many farmers have lost their land and are homeless and in debt. How can farmers send their children to school when they cannot even afford to feed them well?

Our organization was formed to end the suffering of innocent children in El Salvador. Our product is of the highest quality and our prices are competitive with market prices. Our commitment to children and families starts at the coffee plantations where we buy our premium beans.

We can help

We are committed to purchasing our coffee from farms where coffee is grown by cooperatives, under the original shade canopy. These farmers are paid a sustainable price for the beans. Buying coffee in this manner helps to raise living standards for coffee farmers, their families, and their communities while protecting the environment.

We donate 100% of net profits to programs benefiting children in need, to release them from their economic, social, and physical poverty, and to enable them to become fulfilled human beings.
