Coffee Farmers Earn Less Than 100 Years Ago
The price paid to coffee farmers has fallen by more than 70% over the past five years. Taking inflation into account, families are earning less for their product than their ancestors did 100 years ago. Those families depend on the money generated by coffee and are unable to make ends meet. They are pulling their children out of school, foregoing basic medicines, and cutting back on foods.
More Than 300,000 Children Live in the Streets
Estimates of the number of children living in the streets of El Salvador run as high as 300,000. More than 28% of these children reported being abused by authorities, 51% of the injuries reported being beatings, 20% cuts. Even with these injuries and threats, 78% of these children reported feeling safer on the streets than in their own homes.
